Great Story...The Story of Joe Lozito- The Subway Hero

I saw this on another website,  and its a great story.  Below is the description that is with the video so its not mine whatsoever, but I thought I would share with you.

If you DO NOT know who this man is, then as an MMA fan, as a human being, you should. Working in conjunction with Frank Shamrock, I had the opportunity to have a sit down interview with one of Philly’s and NYC’s most notable heroes of this year. Mr Joseph Lozito. Joe was able to take time out with us to discuss what happened on the Subway that fateful day where he was almost killed. But, to his advantage and influence from years of watching Mixed Martial Arts, was able to defend himself and apprehend the attacker- who had just finishing a killing spree throughout NYC. EXECUTIVE PRODUCER Frank Shamrock PRODUCER AND PROJECT COORDINATOR Court Bauer DIRECTED, FILMED AND EDITED BY Kahleem Poole-Tejada SPECIAL THANKS TO Joseph Lozito for this wonderful interview and for being a true inspiration to us all.

Brock Lesnar scares some dude from ESPN

This is kind of funny.  People can talk all the crap they want about Brock Lesnar from their couches, but its a totally different kind of animal when he actually confronts them about it face to face.  The man is very LARGE and a very decorated wrestler, so MMA fighter or not he could put a pop knot on someone's head if he wanted to.

Angel Huerta

Here is a short clip that was done for Angel Huerta who is 3-0 as a Pro in MMA. He is a VERY TALENTED fighter but most importantly he is a great person! He is fighting on April 9th in Houston at the Legacy Fighting Championships. Come out and check him out if you can!

Oh snap!!! He added more solo drills!!!

More solo drills, so now you have no reason not to train!

You tricky Omoplata!!!

I ran across this during my daily reading.  Here is Guilherme Mendes showing a very tricky Omoplata from side control.  Mendes is a world champion and I would guess he knows what he's talking about here.  The video is in Portuguese but once he starts showing the technique you can get the jest of it.  I'm guessing this would be something that you or I couldn't pull off tonight in class, but if you work on it anything is possible.

From the Mind of Babalu #2

Today I did some thinking.  A few weeks ago, I read an article about what Romulo Barral's training schedule looks like you can see it here.http://www.jtsstrength.com/articles/2011/03/15/championship-mentality/ I was wondering what do some of your training schedules look like.  I know none of ours can compare to Romulo's, this guy is a beast!  My thought is how do people work their training around their schedules.  I know some of you work, are students, have families etc...  So how do you do it?

Here is mine:

I work a full time and part time job.  The part time job is at Gracie Barra Texas so that helps with my training schedule.  I have a wife, a 2 year old daughter, and another child on the way.  I train in the classes at Gracie Barra on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.  I try to get in extra work on Fridays and Sundays whether it be just extra rolling or Strength and Conditioning.    I have an extremely understanding wife, and on the days that I try to get extra training I try to limit it to 1 hour- 1.5 hours total.

So that is how I do it... in the same kind of format in the comments field below lets see how everyone else does it.  Should be pretty interesting.

David Vs. Goliath??

No its Bill Cooper Vs. Robert McConkie.  Have you ever been in training and been paired to roll with that one huge guy and thought "What the HELL the dude isn't anywhere near my weight class I'm gonna get smashed!!" Well its always good to roll with those big guys because there is a thing called the absolute division, and besides this is what BJJ was created for.  The smaller man being able to defeat the bigger man.  Have a look. Side note, I don't know why it says crazy guillotine at the top....

Conditioning is key!

I ran across this Strength and Conditioning workout of Brian Foster (1st video) who will be fighting on UFC 129 in Montreal next month.  The second video is another workout of a fighter that strength coach Todd Laux puts  through.  I have done something similar to the second workout before, it is brutal.  These workouts should put in perspective besides skill training and sparring some of the other things fighters put their body through to get ready for a fight.  These types of workouts can not only be used by MMA fighters but also BJJ competitiors as well.  I know I will implement so of what I just saw into some of my workouts.  Enjoy!

Monday Morning Tip...

For all including myself, learn to roll as technical as these two guys.  Marcelo Garcia and JT Torres have a nice No Gi rolling session.  You don't need any sound to appreciate this high level technical session.

Rogue Fight Crew in the House!

I went this morning and had a great workout with Chad Cook, Brian Lightfoot, and Roland Sanchez at Rogue Fight Crew gym.  After the workout I chance to sit and ask Chad Cook, the leader of Rogue Fight Crew, a few questions about his MMA career.  Literally we had just finished working out, so you will have to excuse my camera skills.  My hand was shaking pretty bad LOL.  It was quite a workout.

The Babalu Experience went to Perfect Fit Meals

If you read my previous post about Perfect Fit Meals and already picked up some food you are one step ahead. I picked up some more food today for the week and wanted to show those who still hadn't picked any up a better idea of what I was talking about. Everything I picked up is between 250-300 calories, all delicious meals that I didn't have to cook or put in tupperware LOL! I hope you enjoy!

Triangle from double under pass attempt?? Yes Please!

Man I just saw this on another website and I had to share.  There's been a time where all of us have been in this position and thought "crap I better get ready to at least try a big hip escape."  This particular type of pass has always been a nemsis of mine, so I try to avoid at all costs!!  Take a look and let me know what you think.

From the Mind of Babalu

Today I just have some random thoughts on this wonderful, never ending, always learning journey that is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.   Being involved in this sport for alittle over 6 years now I know my journey is still in the beginning stages, but I also know that I have acquired some very valuable knowledge that I love sharing with anyone who is willing to listen.  Today's audience just happens to be YOU reading this right now.  When I first started training it was always about smashing this person, submitting that person, or dominating this person.  Now as the years have progressed, every time I roll with somebody it is a chance to learn something new.  Whether it be about yourself, your teammate or opponent, and/or BJJ.  I always try to take something positive away from each session.

For a white belt who is very new to the sport and training in general I want to make their experience enjoyable as possible.  The last thing I want to do is be THAT GUY!  The Purple belt who smashes all the new white belts, sends them home with their tail between their legs, and never to return because he just got manhandled.  People who tend to do this kind of stuff aggravate me to no end.  What most people fail to remember is that everyone of us had to start from somewhere.  Me, you readers, all of us were once that white belt with the deer in the headlights look.  Who came into the gym not knowing what to expect, but with the ambition of learning the art and hopefully someday becoming a black belt.  So when I roll with these white belts I try to give them advice/tips on some of the things I may see that can help them in the long run.  Not only this, but I do want to give them a little taste of what my game entails.  To me giving them this feel keeps them hungry for more knowledge and gives them something to look forward to if they continue to put in the time on the mats.

To me a new blue belt is someone who still in there infancy of their Jiu Jitsu journey.  Its funny to me that when you are a blue belt its almost like you are the hunter and the hunted.  The white belts all place a target on your back and the blue belts all place targets on the backs of purples. Trust me I speak from experience here on both ends of the spectrum!  What I feel that new blues should be focusing on is just learning about their own games and of course training Jiu Jitsu.  These guys should be taking everything that they have been taught and try and find out what it is that works for them.  Try new things, if you get swept or submitted in training who cares, its just training.  Start learning how to control positions better and figuring how to piece things together.  In the long run you will see that this will help you!  For those that are wondering, I don't recommend trying to open a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy just yet, but you should start looking into teaching beginners the basics.  This will help your game out a great deal.

As a newer purple, I feel like I have a good grasp on the things that I do well and the things that I don't do well.  My game is starting to take shape and now I just need to make fine tunes to it.  Of course you never stop learning so you are always looking to implement new things into your game that you know will fit.  So of course you are always trying out new things, some will work and some will not so don't be discouraged just keep training Jiu Jitsu.  For the stuff that you don't do well, you don't just throw it all away and forget about it.  I know for me, I still try to work on that stuff and make sure I have it down so if I have to use it I can or, I know enough about it and can do it well enough that I could show someone else how to do it.  As a Purple if your interested in teaching the art later down the road you should inquire about doing so now.  You should be able to easily teach a fundamentals class with confidence and no body should walk away from that class with confusion.

Brown belts.... its my next goal.  I don't know what they should and shouldn't be doing since I don't have the experience with one around my waist yet.  I do know that they should be respected for the time that they have put in on the mat and they should have a broad knowledge of BJJ.  Of course they should be teaching any BJJ class they can, Fundamentals or Advanced.  May be if a brown belt reads this he/she can give some insight to what they believe that belt level should be focusing on.

Black belts.... the pinnacle of your BJJ journey!  Its WAY to far off for me to even think about right now....

I hope you guys enjoyed this post.  Remember this is JUST MY OPINION, it is how I feel about my experiences that I have enjoyed on this journey.  Feel free to share your opinions!

Don't have anyone to train with???

People always have an excuse as why they can't train... The biggest excuse I've heard is that no one can train right now.  You've got a problem, well this guy's video provides a solution.  Have fun!

Professor Draculino - Arm Drag from Hook Flip/Butterfly Guard

You know I always have to support my guys.  Here is another video from Poppa Rotzee Productions with my instructor Professor Draculino teaching an arm drag from the Hook Flip/ Butterfly Guard position.  Draculino is a master of breaking down little details in his teachings!  If you haven't seen DraculinoBJJtraining.com check it out!  I'm on it as much as I can!

Trying to Lose or Cut Weight?

Participating in a combat sport can be brutal on your body.  As a combat athlete we all have to take proper care of our temple and what goes into it. Giving our body the proper rest and recovery time can be a crucial factor to how we preform on the mats or in the cage.  One important detail that may get overlooked sometimes through our daily grind is the food that we take in. I've seen it way too often (I'm totally guilty as well), people step on the scale in the morning see a number that you don't like and think "I REALLY need to clean up my diet!"

Most of the time, knowing how to eat healthy is generally not the problem. The problem I had and would guess that a lot of you have is the time to prepare your meals, pack them everyday to take with you to your job, and stopping at the grocery store every few days.  It can be done don't get me wrong.  I've done it for a really long time, but with working 2 jobs and having a family it always seems easier just to stop at a fast food place and pick up something.  For me its pick up something twice (I'm a big breakfast guy).  So if I need to pick up breakfast and lunch I could spend anywhere from 12-15 dollars a day.  Its usually terrible choices of food that we make during these times that causes us to see these large numbers on the scale that we despise.  Lets face it being involved in a sport where, when its time to compete your weight has to be on point and your body has to feel as close to 100% as possible, you must take full of advantage of anything that keeps you a step ahead.

Ready for a solution??

I recently had been turned on to a company called Perfect Fit Meals. This company offers gourmet cooked meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  These meals not only taste great but, are properly portioned and made with a mix of lean proteins, vegetables, and whole grains! One of the best things is that its not just one or 2 types of meals to choose from.  Its a HUGE variety!!!  Its just like going to a restaurant only at a fraction of the cost. (Here is a link to their menu)  Now I know a lot of people out there have that sweet tooth problem.  Check their menu again, yes, they even offer some healthy desserts! For those of you who really want to get down to the science of eating healthy to determine what is correct mix of food for yourself.  They even offer Consultations to help determine the best meal plan for you.

With Perfect Fit Meals, it is not just one central location.  I know, Houston traffic can be terrible!  They have partnered with at least 55 local fitness centers and nutritional supplement stores in and around the Houston the area for your convenience.  Check the locations here.  They have made it extremely simple to go into one of these retail spots pick up a weeks worth of food store it in your refrigerator or freezer and change not only your eating habits, but your lifestyle as well!  I've done it, and brought it to the attention of about 4 other guys to it.  Give them a try I'm positive you won't be disappointed!

Half-Guard Choke

Just saw this video posted on Poppa Rotzee's Facebook page... its pretty tricky.  Check it out.

Anthony Robles win NCAA National Championship... with one leg

This is such a great story!  Anthony Robles, a collegiate wrestler from Arizona State University recently won a National Championship in the 125 lbs. weight class!  You might think ok that is great but, so did quite a few other wrestlers as well.  Well Mr. Robles won his title with just one leg!!!  This is a true testament that if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything!  This guy is an amazing athlete, Mr. Robles I salute you!  Below is his full match in the finals, the guy is a beast!

Samuel Braga Seminar

Yesterday I had the privilege to be a part of the Samuel Braga seminar at the academy.  Samuel is one of the greatest BJJ competitors at his weight class his accomplishments include multiple time World Champion, National Champion, Pan Am Champion and the list could go on and on.  I got a chance to know Samuel a bit when Draculino first opened his academy, Samuel was there with him and was his assistant instructor.  After a few months he moved to Tennessee to run his own school.  While he was working here it was known that he was a great competitor, but not too many people got the chance to listen to him teach and learn from him because Professor Draculino was the Head Instructor.  Yesterday at the seminar I came to realize what a fantastic teacher Professor Braga really is.  He taught the techniques with extreme details, breaking down all the finer points of each of them so it was easy to comprehend and practice the techniques.  Those of you that have an opportunity to train with him full time are a lucky bunch of guys/girls.  So if you live around the Knoxville, TN area and looking for a place to train I highly recommend Professor Braga!

Why am I doing... The Babalu Experience

Man, I have a crazy life!  I have 2 jobs full time and part time.  I have a beautiful family at home and at Gracie Barra Texas, and I try to fit time in my week for everything.  I train about 4-5 times a week whether it be BJJ, strength and conditioning, and this past week I just got back to alittle kickboxing.  I compete as much as I can but sometimes my plate is just too full.  I try and help my good friends with training for fights etc... so I see alot of different things.  Whether it be at the gym training, working at the academy, or at local MMA shows that I attend regularly you would be surprised at some of the stuff I run across.  During my journey I'm always looking to learn things to add to my game and always run across things that make me laugh.  I hope with this blog I can share some of these things with you that will make your journey through Combat sports as enjoyable as mine.

A little side note for those that don't know me.  I didn't pick the name Babalu, it was given to me...I really had no say in the matter.  I already know of Renato "Babalu" Sobral, and one of the first days training with Draculino he says " man! you look just like Babalu... you move like him, you talk like him, that's your name now, Babalu."  So who am I to say NO to that.  I would say at least 95% of the people at the gym I train at don't even know my real name, which is fine I guess.  So that is the story behind the name of the blog.  I will let you be the judge here is a pic of me getting my purple belt last year and a pic of the real Babalu.
