Training Blog- 05/31 ESP-XC Time!!! Day 1

As promised in my previous training blog, I had something coming up and was going to be working with the guys over at ESP-XC.com to review their 90 day work out program geared towards combat athletes.  Before I started I wanted to make sure I got my move out of the way and the recent holiday of eating bad.  As you know when you move 99.9% of the time you eat terrible and I was no different and with the past Memorial Day Holiday right after my move I knew that I would put on some weight so what a better time to start fresh.

So here we are, its May 31st, and tonight I will start the Endurance Phase of the ESP-XC workout.  The first workout will be legs, and I'm already dreading it.  I dislike the feeling I get when working out my legs, but its something I will have to get past because I know its a must for me to get into the best shape and its a must for you to know if this workout program that they are selling works well or not.  As for me personally at the moment, I'm not in terrible shape, but I'm not in competition shape either.  So I will use this as a base to see if it can get to where I want/need to be.  I have never been shredded either, what can I say I love food WAY too much, but during this 90 days I will have a clean diet in hopes of getting as lean as possible.  I will still be training BJJ at least 3 times a week sometimes more so I will need to play with my caloric intake to see what works best for me.  I plan on starting at about 2200 calories a day and seeing where that takes me.  I didn't get an opportunity to weigh myself this morning but if I had to guess I would be about 220 lbs which is a little heavier than I like to be when walking around.  (I will post the numbers tonight and my starting pictures as well)

So here is what I plan to do:
1. Do their daily workouts and post my HONEST opinion of each of them and how I felt during the workout, after the workout, and the next morning.
2. Within that post I will give you the food that I ate, even if I cheat, so you know if my diet is clean or not.  Today I have eaten breakfast- 2 whole eggs with ham and some turkey sausage, mid morning snack- banana, lunch- turkey burger on whole wheat bread, dinner- I plan on 6-8oz of chicken breast, cup of brown rice, and about 4 oz of mixed veggies and a after workout protein shake which I will post the nutritional content later.
3. I will have a weekly weight check and post it so you can see any progress that I have made this will include my body fat % as well.
4. I already drink plenty of water, about a gallon a day so I will continue with this.

If you are interested in this, by all means follow along and ask questions if you have any.  If this stuff doesn't interest I understand you don't have to follow

Another Great Story!!

This gentleman doesn't let his lack of eye sight stop him from what he loves to do!  This to me is very inspirational and could be motivational for people who have every excuse in the book to not come and spend an hour or 2 on the mat.  Check it out.

No Excuses!!!

I saw this today and it brings to mind an excuse that I hear or read on an email everyday.  People say I would love to start BJJ, but I want to get in shape first.  My response to them is, that is what we are hear for there is no better way to get is shape for BJJ than by doing BJJ.  Apparently this guy followed his local BJJ school's advice and jumped in the class.  For people who have never done anything like this don't be afraid.  Fear is something that is natural when you are starting any new venture in life.  Never fear what other people will think because you're doing something to better yourself and your health, I don't know of anyone that can talk down to or make fun of you  for putting in the effort to do so.  This to me, is truly inspirational.  I hope the guy continues on his path and reaches all his goals that he has set forth for himself.

Great Interview from JT Torres.

Ze Mario Sperry Interview about his upcoming Superfight at ADCC- From Tatame.com

Ze Mario Sperry sees Renzo Gracie in advantage at ADCC 2011 super fight

BJJ black belt graduated by Carlson Gracie, Ze Mario Sperry has a great history in fighting. World champion of Jiu-Jitsu and absolute champion of ADCC, keeping the title after two super fights, the tough guy will return to the mats this year, on a match-up fight, in ADCC 2011, against another legend of the sport: Renzo Gracie.

“I was caught by surprise”, reveals the black belt, on an exclusive interview with TATAME, commenting on his expectations for the duel on which he promise to be always remembered and also talking about his life in general, betting on an advantage of his opponent when it comes to “fighting rhythm”, and analyzing he bouts between Royler Gracie vs. Eddie Bravo, scheduled for the same ADCC edition, and Braulio Estima vs. Ronaldo Jacare, a super fight that will figure one of the main events of the tournament.

How did you get the invitation to fight in ADCC?

Man, I was caught by surprise. The guys from the Arab Emirates and they invited me and I got tempted, despite I’m not fighting anymore, I’m not training frequently or taking it serious. I was tempted with the invitation, especially since it’s a bout against Renzo, a great name in the sport.

You two are close to Sheik... Do you know who the idea came from?

Man, I believe it was him (Sheik)… I gotta tell you that I have no clue whatsoever of who came up with this idea.

What you hope when fighting Renzo?

You see, in my point of view, it’s a great opportunity to me to relive that thrill of all that I’ve been through in ADCC, and try, in a way, to return to the sport with this invitation, but I’m not fighting for a long time… I don’t train on regular basis, I’m not that excited about competing anymore. I believe that that’s the greatest legacy I’ve got with this invitation: to feel again the thrill of being competing. It’s priceless.

Renzo’s been teaching on his gym in New York and he’s been coaching guys like St. Pierre and Frankie Edgar, both UFC champions. Do you think it’ll be an advantage he’ll have against you, since he’s training and teaching every day?

Absolutely. Renzo’s on the fighting business, and I’m not, I don’t fight for a living anymore for years. It’ll be an advantage for him, for sure. But, apart from that, I want to take it as a self-pleasure, I’ll try to get back in shape the best way I can and do a good presentation.

What have you been doing since you stopped fighting?

I got into a business. I’d rather not talk about it for now (laughs).

But are you still training hard? What do you do then?

Man, to tell you the truth, I don’t. I train when I can. I run, I work out, I try to be in touch with the sport as much as I can, but obviously I don’t do it for a living anymore, so I’m not that close as I used to be.

Where will you train for this bout?

I’ll train here with my friends. I know lot of people in Rio de Janeiro. Basically it’ll be it. I’ll try to train the most I can, when I have the time to do it, I will.

Do you consider training at BTT?

I’ll train here in Barra (in Rio de Janeiro), because it’s easier for me. There’re the guys from X-Gym, where I work out. There are many guys here. It’s hard to find some time to train, but I’ll take it as a challenge, so let’s move on and see where it goes.

They’ve also matched a bout between Royler and Eddie Bravo. What do you hope to see on this fight?

Well, I believe Royler is more likely to win this one. Each bout is unique, and it’s always hard. But I guess Royler has more game, he’s aware of Eddie Bravo’s strong points, so he’ll come hungry for winning… Let’s see. I believe Royler will crave this win like crazy.

Since their first bout, eight years ago, Eddie Bravo has been focusing his trainings with no gi. Do you believe it can be an X factor for this bout against Royler?

It’s hard to tell because I don’t know what Royler is up to, I don’t know what Eddie Bravo has been doing, but looking at their record, Royler has done much more, so I believe he’s capable of winning this bout. Absolutely his name will be a factor and, this time, I guess he’ll be more focused on it than he was when they last fought… He’ll be more focused and prepared this time.

There’s also the super fight between Braulio, who earned weight and absolute titles in 2009, versus Ronaldo, who has defeated Drysdale. How do you think it’ll end like?

It’ll be a very busy fight, they’ll move a lot. Braulio is dangerous, he has a great spin, his guard imposes a strong rhythm, he can be attack you from anywhere. I believe it’ll be a busy fight and it’ll all depend on whoever is stronger, focused and better conditioned.

Training Blog- 05/17

Good night of training last night!  We went over a basic double leg when your opponent still has grips on your lapel.  We then reviewed the North-South choke starting from the side control position.  Great basic technique that Professor Draculino breaks down step by step with the smallest of details.  I love how he does this it makes even the hardest of techniques easier to comprehend.  After this we did some situational training from the side control position that we usually do when we are working from a position.  Since it was a big class last night we rolled two 7 min rounds.  I had 2 good hard rolls last night.  I did a good job of recovering guard and half guard from being on the bottom of side control.  I was really happy with that dealing with another high level purple belt.  I also felt good working from my guard was able to pull a couple of sweeps in one of the rounds.  I wasn't too pleased with losing position while attempting submissions which I did on a few occasions.  I will continue to work to get better on that aspect.  I still need to get better at controlling from top side control as well as some guard passing but that will come with some extra work.

My daily eating this week has been better and I'm feeling really good.  I'm excited about the opportunity to do a product review for the guys over at www.esp-xc.com Once I get moved in the next few weeks and get settled in I will start that process.

Training Blog- 05/14-05/15

Guys I'm sorry, the website host was having difficulties the past few days.  I couldn't post any new material and it even deleted some of my previous posts.  I got some pretty big news coming (hopefully) so for the time being this will be my last training blog post.  I am working on setting up something with a company that provides top not training regimes for all combat athletes.  If all goes well I will be doing a product review of their 12 week system and hope to get some feed back from you guys on the workouts.  Maybe it will give you some incentive to purchase it and do it along with me.  Check out their website if you have some time http://www.esp-xc.com/

Saturday was a good day of BJJ.  We went over the week of techniques and then rolled two 10 min rounds, and two 5 min rounds.  I rolled with some tough guys and had a great workout.  Sunday I got up and went and taught a private lesson.  After the private lesson, I did about an hour of Strength and Conditioning.  Yesterday was a full body workout and attempted to limit my rest time during the workout.  It was tough, but we made it through.  Another great thing about this weekend was I was able to make it to Nutrition Depot and pick up some Perfect Fit Meals and some more protein.  My diet will be on point again and look forward to getting back into the swing of things.  I am pretty excited about the next few weeks.  I have alot on my plate (as usual) but I will continue to push through.

Some nice armbar finishes

Training Blog- 05/12/11

Yesterday wasn't much of a training day.  I got on the mat a little bit and worked some side control escapes and top positions.  Just one round of each but lord knows I need it, so every little bit counts.  My eating was cleaned up a bit, well after breakfast it was LOL.  I think I had two breakfast tacos from the deli downstairs in my building.  For lunch I had a salad with some light honey mustard dressing, and for dinner I had Rotisserie Chicken breast and green beans.  Also for snacks yesterday I had a banana, some mixed nuts, some beef jerky, and my one guilty pleasure a fun sized pack of peanut M&Ms LOL!  This is the down fall of not having the time the past few weeks to go and pick up my Perfect Fit Meals.  I struggle with making good food choices because my time is so limited to prepare my food.  Trust me when you are away from home as much as I am the last thing I want to do when I get home is prepare food.

Today will be a good day of training, and hopefully I don't fall off the wagon with my diet hahaha!

ADCC Superfights!!!

If you haven't seen it on every single other BJJ/MMA related websites yet, then you heard it here first LOL!!

CONFIRMED

Eddie Bravo vs. Royler Gracie Part 2
Renzo Gracie vs. Mario Sperry

This could be spectacular!

Training Blog- 05/11/11

05/10/11

I missed the warm ups.  This doesn't excite me, but its the price you have to pay when you work at the academy.  Some people always dog on me and Colby for not doing the warm ups all the time, but you have to understand that our work has to be taken care of first before any training can happen and I understand that.  I didn't miss any of the technique though.  Today we worked on a basic double leg takedown with an outside hook.  This is a go to take down for a lot of people that I know, its simple, basic, and very effective.  On the ground we learned an effective way to break the grip of someone who is defending the kimura by grabbing their own belt while you are in the side control position.  While working on the technique we all found out just how painfully effective it was.  Its one of those things that you cannot help but let go of your belt because you will suffer the consequences.  After that we learned a slick reverse arm bar from the top side control position to knee on belly.  I have used this type of arm bar from the guard but never from this position.  I like the set up.  Its very smooth and it should be something that I work on to add into my game.

Live training today we started with some situational training from side control.  I don't know what it was but I wasn't comfortable with my side control last night.  How it worked was guy on top tried to submit, mount, or take the back.  Guy on bottom was to sweep or regain any kind of guard.  The winner stayed on top and someone else came in and took the losers place.  Side control has been a solid position for me in the past.  Just for some reason last night I just didn't feel comfortable on top.  I don't know what it was I mean I won more than I lost last night, but I wasn't comfortable at all.  I think on some occasions I got a little impatient from the top and tried to force things that were not there.  Who knows, but I do know that will be a focus of mine in the near future to work on.  We did this for about 15 mins then we did some live training.  I don't exactly know how long the rounds were last night.  They weren't extremely long, but it was still good training.  I got completely smashed by Big Serg!  Serg is a big guy but to add to that he is extremely technical high level purple belt as well.  So my usual game really has no effect on him whatsoever LOL!  I try things cause I don't want to be that guy that just stays there to be safe, but the last thing I want is be on bottom side control looking out for all his tricky chokes and dealing with top pressure.  Guess where I spent most of the round last night?  If you guessed on bottom of his side control dealing with his tricky chokes and top pressure you are right!  Which equates to a miserable round for me and getting smashed hahaha!  I did a couple of more rounds with a couple of blue belts which on of them I worked my bottom submission/sweep set ups and the other I wanted to test the "Secret Agent Sweep and Choke" Lets just say Secret Agent Sweep 2 Me 2 LOL I swept me twice with that sweep and I was able to pass cleanly avoiding the sweep two times .  I don't even know the names of these techniques but the sweep he hits it from everywhere, as soon as you pass to side, if you try knee on belly, when you think you are safe, you are not.  I was able to steer clear of the his famous choke that he has improved on hitting it from various positions as well so that was a victory in itself.

All in all it was a great night of training.  I saw some opportunities of some things that I think I need to work on.  I also some some improvements on some technical aspects of my game that I have been working on.

From the Mind of Babalu #6... Training Blogs

Guys, sorry I haven't posted anything in a few days.  I just haven't run across any good information to share so instead of filling my blog with crap I decided not to post until I found some good stuff.  I did decide, however, that its time to make myself a little more accountable with my training.  The past few weeks I have been extremely busy with just life itself and the next couple of months I just don't see any slow down, I have ALOT on my plate right now to say the least.  With all this busy time, I have let my diet slip, I have let my training slip (BJJ and Conditioning) and its time to put my foot down.  So starting today I will post the previous days training events to put myself out there.  When I get lazy, I don't have to answer to anyone, but if I get lazy now everyone will see it on the blog.  If I decide to eat 10 cookies everyone will know and I want people to dog the hell out of me for it.  Today I will post last night's training and my thoughts and tomorrow I will start documenting my food intake as well.  I recommend a lot of people do the same as me, this is the best way, I think, to know if you really are training and eating effectively and efficiently.  If anyone has any questions or recommendations regarding my training and/or diet please don't hesitate to post in the comment section.  Stay tuned guys!

Product Review - BJJ Life Products

Earlier this week I received a great promotional package from Luke over at BJJ Life, WWW.THEBJJLIFESTYLE.COM The package contained a great t-shirt, one of their BJJ Life Belts (which is a brilliant idea by the way), a BJJ Belt Key Chain, some BJJ Life stickers, and some promo cards.  I am very excited to do a product review for Luke and the guys over at BJJ Life.  This is such a unique company with a TON of great ideas and products!  They are using what they have to spread the word of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to masses and help the BJJ community with everything from ways to save money on products to sponsorships!  Above is a shot of what the entire promotional package looked like.

BJJ Life Belt

The first item I wanted to look at was the BJJ Life Belt.  As you can see from the picture above Luke was kind enough to send out a blue belt to me and I was very happy to see the belt in the package!  Since I didn't own one, I was very curious as to the make of it and fit.  When I pulled it out of the package my first reaction was, this is a real BJJ belt!  It was thick and stiff like you would expect when you get promoted on the mats and get that brand new belt.  Now for the kicker... would it really hold up my pants?  As expected there was no problems in this department.  The two very sturdy metal D-Rings kept the belt snug and it place.  I had no worries of sporting an unexpected pant sag with this belt on.  As you will notice from the picture there is even a tab to show off your promotions if you wanted to.  This is where I had to improvise a little bit. (See Last Picture)  I really wanted to get a good feel for the belt so I could make a great review.  I wore this belt for 3 days straight.   Since I have earned my Purple belt in BJJ and have one stripe on my purple I didn't want demote myself LOL!  For the sake of doing a great review and not having to answer all kinds of dumb questions in the gym about why I was wearing a blue belt around, I added a total of 6 stripes to the belt.  Four stripes that took me through my blue belt, one for my purple belt and one for the stripe I have on my purple belt.  Well I still got the questions, but that was a good thing because it brought attention to the actual belt itself and everyone that saw it and loved it as well!  If you are like me and proud of the hard work and dedication that you have done to earn your belt in BJJ you might as well show it off to the outside world and do it with style with the BJJ Life Belt!  They have have all 5 colors so no one is left out... GET YOURS TODAY!

BJJ Belt Key Ring

Another perfect way to show your love and commitment to the BJJ lifestyle.  Its a key ring made from an actual BJJ belt.  I know most dudes out there don't have any key chains or whatever, but this one supports the cause and helps spread the word about BJJ Life.  People who don't know will definitely ask once they see this and its a good way to start a conversation about BJJ and bring more people over.  Just don't bedazzle the belt key ring or anything like that... if you don't your manhood is still intact, if you do well that's another date and another time.

The Shirt (and belt with my stripes LOL)

Now I am a T-Shirt and jeans guy.  That is all I wear outside of work.  When I opened this package and saw this shirt it brought back so many awesome memories!  Memories of sitting in my room as a kid and playing with my GI Joes, watching the cartoon in the mornings, and singing the GI Joe song!  HA HA For those that don't know, the design on the shirt is a GI Joe design and its brilliant!  As a kid I loved GI Joe action figures as an adult my passion is BJJ so I have one word for this shirt... WINNER!!!  This shirt is one of many unique and clever designs that you can find over at www.TheBJJLifestyle.com  The shirt itself is made of a 50/50 design of organic cotton and recycled polyester, which means its preshrunk and makes it one of the most comfortable shirts I own.  Its feels so light you really don't notice you are wearing a shirt at all.  The gun metal color of the shirt flows with the theme of GI Joe and the words written across your chest... BJJ LIFE... makes this shirt off the chain!

So if you get a chance go by and checkout BJJ Life not only can you get some unique shirts, belts, and key chains, but you can find some awesome rash guards, fight shorts, gym bags, and pretty much any thing you need for your BJJ lifestyle!  While you are there make sure you join their LEGION and save on gear and work towards gaining a sponsorship and cash to compete!

Budget Training with Rosstraining.com

Here is some great ideas for training on a budget.  Lets face it with gas prices going out of control some people just don't want to drive to the gym.... who could blame you.  Ross Enamait has been producing books and videos for years.  The guy is an animal!!!  He gives some work out exercise ideas that you can do with limited equipment.  Enjoy!

Escaping from Side Control Concepts

I ran across this video today.  The guy has a different approach to what everyone has been taught when trying to escape from side control.  I think there are alot of truths to some of the things he says, and actually I use some of what he says in my game already.  Tell me what you think.

From the Mind of Babalu #5... The Martial Arts in Mixed Martial Arts

Over the past week or so I have been having a unique discussion with a traditional martial artists.  When I say Traditional or TMA I mean Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Ninjistu etc... all the arts that are very form intensive.  I am not here to say my martial art is better than anybody else's martial art.  I'm not the type of person to bash on the choice anyone decides to make regarding their self defense practices, but its human nature for you to side with the art that you practice and believe in.  For me its human nature to side with an art, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, that I have a passion for, that I teach, and have seen it used effectively in and out of the ring or cage.  Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is not just a martial art to me, its a lifestyle.

This discussion that I spoke of earlier was about the evolution of MMA which in his opinion strikers were taking over the sport of MMA and the use of TMAs inside the cage were going to be at the forefront of this evolution.  With the recent events of Anderson Silva knocking out Vitor Belfort and more recently Lyoto Machida knocking out Randy Couture with simple front push or snap kicks every single TMA enthusiast wet their pants just alittle on those nights with excitement.  Lets face it to be a successful professional Mixed Martial Artists their are 4 main components that you have train on a regular basis.  In no particular order, your stand up art either kickboxing or Muay Thai mixing in boxing as well, your Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and of course strength and conditioning.  Some fighters may even find a use for some techniques from other TMAs and mix those in as well, thats why its called Mixed Martial Arts!  They use whatever will help them win the fight.  With that being said, all the arts mentioned above as your main components are the arts that have been proven to be effective in the cage or the ring in the sport of MMA.

To take it just a little further about the opinion that strikers are taking over MMA, being a great striker is all well and good and needed to be successful but its far from the only art needed.  Even with the success of Muay Thai, Kickboxing, and Boxing in MMA if that is all you are then you are looking at a very short career in MMA.  Someone who steps inside the cage with high level striking and little to no wrestling or BJJ knowledge cannot succeed even at the lower levels of MMA.  Yes they may be able to catch someone with a kick or punch and end the fight but that is highly unlikely.  Just take a look at James Toney vs. Randy Couture.  Now on the flip side a strong grappler with little knowledge of stand up skills can still be very successful.  Just look at Jake Shields, the guy is a very elite grappler with great wrestling and great BJJ and he came into the fight with GSP on a 15 fight winning streak. With that being said every fighter has a base in some art.  Every successful fighter has an art in particular that they do better than the other arts.  Some are better at kickboxing versus grappling and vice versa, but to be complete you have train them all and continue to try to improve in all of them.

Another area of discussion that I had with the TMA guy was the use of Traditional Martial Arts inside the cage/ring.  I am not saying that these arts aren't relevant, all I'm saying is these arts have yet to be proven base art for a successful MMA fighter except Lyoto Machida.  Who is a black belt in a type of Shotokan karate that is combat based.  What you haven't seen at a high level of Mixed Martial Arts is a fighter whose base is primarily Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Ninjitsu, and the list could go and on.  Forget the high level even on the local level you will not see this.  Why?  Because it has not been proven effective inside the cage.  It may have been proven effective on the street or with various police agencies but minus those 2 kicks that got the TMAers pants wet, in the cage it is absent.  For example I'm a BJJ guy, if I was to prepare for an MMA fight I would work hard on my base art with my instructor, then my instructor would probably say why don't you go to this guy over here who has a great knowledge of boxing and kickboxing to work on your standup to help you get ready.  There is no way humanly possible that my instructor will ever tell me to go around the corner to this local Kung Fu or Tai Chi school to work on my stand up.  Those words will never come out of his mouth.... Again why??  Because as a whole they have not been shown to be effective in MMA.  Like I stated before, you may stumble across some techniques that can be used effectively in MMA from the TMAs, but using most of them as your base art to fight MMA is not wise in my opinion.

I will end this by saying that all martial arts have their place.  The respect, discipline, honor, camaraderie, self defense, and life skills that it teaches us and our younger generation on a regular basis is irreplaceable.  I'm not a basher of the Traditional Martial Arts at all, just from what I have experienced in MMA as a sport I am a realist.  Realistically until these arts are proven in the cage/ring as a whole, people interested in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts will always look at the arts successful and proven in the cage/ring for training avenues to better themselves for the sport.  Let me know what you think... give me some opinions I would love to hear them.

Whose head was worse???

Hasim Rahman after his fight with Evander Holyfield which took place back in 2002.  The fight was stopped after 8 rounds and Holyfield was given the victory after being ahead on every judge's score card.  The ref after advice from the doctor stopped the fight.

Here is two shots of Fernando Vargas' eye after his TKO loss to Shane Mosely back in 2006.  The fight was actually a very close fight until the fight was stopped in the 10th due to that massive swelling that you see on his eye on your left.

Mark Hominick's massive hematoma after his loss to Jose Aldo on Saturday night.  This fight was allowed to continue and Jose Aldo remained the champ winning by unanimous decision.  So in your opinion who's head looks worse???  Let me know

Nick Diaz Vs. GSP

I love the matchup... I think this would be a great fight.  Regardless of what you may think of Diaz, I think he is a great fighter and a tough match up of GSP.
